there's a photorec sorter script at http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/After_Using_PhotoRec
but parted magic doesn't have python so it possible to include minimal python just enough to run that script?

Python is big.

If you use Windows (photorec works on Windows too, BTW), you can run PhotoRec Sorter on Windows after you did the recovery on Parted Magic:

If you run Linux, you can run the Python script on your normal distro (which probably will have python), after the file recovery. It isn't very difficult to rewrite the python script in bash (assuming you are talking about the "python recovery.py /home/me/recovered_files /home/me/sorted_file" script).
