KPPP or PPP?

Postby Kubuntu76 » Wed Jul 15, 2009 1:16 pm

KPPP is a useful tool and small. I think it would serve the community to have the package included and if not kppp then ppp. There are many users who find themselves using dial-up or broadband moble card, both which need a dialer. Not sure why something like this is not included all ready. The rest of the CD is amazing and I use it everyday to save my friends and family M$ headaches.
also: anti-virus would be nice Bit-defender for unices has a free one that doesn't load until you ask it to.
its at http://unices.bitdefender.com

It is free for personal use, but you still need to obtain a license for Bitdefender.

You can use the antivirus modules that I made already (ClamAV and F-prot). I will update them this week again.

KPPP? Come on dude!!!11! :D That would require an entire list of KDE libs. Run "ldd /usr/bin/kppp" and you will see what I mean.

These are some reasons why there is no dial-up networking:

1) Nobody has ever asked.

I'm not opposed to this, but there are some problems. There is no ppp GUI that doesn't require GNOME, KDE, or python. There is NO way I will install any of those. What we can do is install ppp and then somebody can help us write a GUI in Xdialog. I think Wvdial would be the best command line front end to use. Which there is another problem. I have no way to test dial-up.

Are you willing to download test versions of Parted Magic at least once or twice a day to help me get this going? Are you knowledgeable enough to bring-up the network in the command line, so I can write a simple Xdialog GUI?

If this is going to happen, I need some serious hand-outs.

First off we are both lucky! I am looking to give back as part of a linux community. Your project is one of the best I have seen in it's category. Secondly ppp package 155k(Not a gui) is also used for 3g modems and as you know many millions of people cannot get cable modems...So yes I can use command line and ...another option UMTSmon :D

The latest test version has the kernel drivers and ppp.

Try to bring the network up in the command line and give me the exact commands/config file changes it took to make it happen. I can make a GUI in Xdialog if I know the proper steps and whatnot.

Hey thanks for the quick compile. I checked out the iso and its missing pppconfig. I ran my modem via wvdial yesterday from a live distro so I know that one works. If you want to cut ppp and add wvdial I can send you the configuration later today. :D

Well anyway, I'm uploading a test version with wvdial right now. I'm leaving till Sunday, so give it a try and hopefully I can start on a Xdialog wizard so it will be really easy to do early next week. I believe wvdial needs the ppp package or at least pppd.

Hang in there. I'm going to need help debugging the GUI too. :D

I'm up!
O.K.
not too difficult
1. wvdialconf (there's a difference between this and the latter)
2. cd /etc
3. nano wvdial.conf
4. Edit Phone and user name and password (take out the # obviously) :D
5. wvdial
finished I am writing this via wvdial
Send me the gui anytime and I will test it for you

See if you can add a selection for baud rate too that would be great.

Can you send me or post here your /etc/wvdial.conf? Just put X's over the user name, etc... I can't generate a file to grep/awk/sed because I don't own a dial-up modem. I need the exact syntax of their config file made with wvdialconf to make this work with the GUI. I have about 90% of it done now.

Almost ready for GUI testing. I also have the "save session" set-up if you want to use that in conjunction with saving the network settings.
