User can't do anything after 30 secs of boot

Found a bug in Parted Magic?

User can't do anything after 30 secs of boot

Postby nekkon » Thu Sep 23, 2010 2:11 am

Hello. I have a weird problem and I am trying to find a solution. After I boot with parted magic all works normally in all modes. Even internet connection. Around 20-30 secs after everything becomes inactive. Screen refreshes but can't move cursor nor use keyboard. Any suggestions? I am booting it from a MacBook Pro. Thank you!

Dear Nekkon,
What version of PartedMagic are you using? - current is 5.5.
Alas it cannot be ruled out that this is a MacBook-specific symptom.

I downloaded the latest version, burnt on cd and booted with it. All looks good. Really cant find the problem. I have tried the last days all other linux rescue cds, UBCD, UBCD for windows, Hiren's CD and burnt them and had no problems. So far the one I liked most is parted magic because it loads fast, works good, looks nice and does what I want. The only problem is that it freezes on my MacBook Pro and I can't find why! I have the latest version.. For any more info please don't hesitate to ask. It is important for me to fix it. Thank you!

You can open two terminals, run "tail -f /var/log/messages" and "tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log" and see if some useful message show up when keyboard and mouse stop responding.

Thanks Dukers I will try it now. I just checked the md5 checksum and it was ok. So it shouldn't have to do anything with cd content. It does the same thing from ram and from cd boot. Anyway, I will try it and tell you.

Ok. I write down some system info, what terminal said and at the end some things I noticed and don't know if they matter..

System info:
Hostname:Parted Magic
Linux:kernel:2.635.4-pmagic
CPU Details:i686, 2786 (MHz)
CPU USAGE:1%
RAM USAGE:73.7MB (2%)
AVAILABLE RAM: 2,69GB
Processes:140 Running:1

Terminal:
(before freezing)
.
.
.
auth.info login(5067) root login on 'tty1'
(trackpad, keyboard freezes)

user.info kernel: usb2-5:reset high speed usb using echi_hcd and address3
User.info kernel: usb2-5:device not accepting address 3 error -110
user.info kernel: usb2-5:USB disconnect, address 3
user.info kernel:sd 10:0:0:0:0 Device offlined - not ready after error recovery

I tried with external mouse but the same. Also while booting if I have my finger on trackpad, it doesn't boot. Only when I release it boots. During 'frozen state' processes continue to work. Once when it froze while typing, the letter continued going on unstoppedly (like thisssss) but everything else was frozen. Any suggestions or info that can be helpful? Thank you for your help so far!

Some other things I forgot to mention. I redownloaded iso, reburnt on second cd and still the same. Also I noticed that running from cd freezes faster than freezing from ram. I will continue experimenting to find the problem. If any suggestions please don't hesitate.

After some googling I found out that there is a ehci_hcd problem with USB 2.0 devices generally in linux and depends on kernel. Also, my trackpad is recognized as USB device and has problems with ehci_hcd. The solution suggested in many websites is to type in terminal: modprobe -r ehci_hcd. I see that the command modprobe exists in this kernel but not the module ehci_hcd. When I typed the command it could not find the module. I would like some help if possible. Thank you!
